A Holtsville woman crashed her car early Friday morning, she told police, when she swerved to avoid an animal in the road.

The 22-year-old woman, whose identity was not released, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after the single-car crash on County Road 83 just before 5 a.m. Friday.

Suffolk County police said the woman was driving her Kia Sorrento south on CR 83, North Ocean Avenue, near Robinson Avenue in Medford, when she said "an unknown type of animal ran in front of her car, causing her to swerve."

The sport utility vehicle veered off the road, struck a utility pole, traveled 100 feet and then overturned before coming to a stop, police said. The force of the collision cracked the pole.

Police said no charges were filed in the crash.
