A Westhampton man who saved another man from drowning in the Atlantic Ocean in 2009 will be honored Saturday by the Coast Guard.

Jonathan Pearlroth saved the man, who had fallen from his small boat while attempting to untangle a fishing line south of Moriches Inlet on Oct. 22, 2009, the Coast Guard said. The man was not immediately identified.

The Coast Guard said the man saved by Pearlroth was not wearing a lifejacket and was unable to get back to his boat. Pearlroth heard the man's call for help, called 911, grabbed a flotation device and swam out to help him.

But though Pearlroth kept the man from drowning, he was unable to drag him back to shore. He held onto him and kept him afloat until a rescue crew could reach them.

Officials at the Coast Guard Station in Shinnecock nominated Pearlroth for the award in March 2010.

He will be honored with its Silver Lifesaving Medal at a ceremony there.
