A fire in an East Northport home erupted after a resident took coals from his backyard he thought were extinguished into the house, officials said.
Firefighters responded to the home on Meadow Lark Drive around 9:48 p.m. on Friday, according to a Suffolk County Police Department spokeswoman.
The fire badly damaged the area near the front door of the residence, according to a photo from the scene, and smoke could be seen pouring from the roof of the home.
Officials said the resident took the coals from his yard and brought them inside to throw them away. The fire is not considered suspicious, police said.
The house is condemned, police said.
The East Northport Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request for information.
