An 82-year-old recreational hunter accidentally shot another hunter Sunday in Calverton, police said.
Riverhead police said the shooter was at the Peconic River Sportsman Club, 389 River Rd., when he "accidentally discharged his gun" striking a 63-year-old man in his lower right leg at about 10:20 a.m.
The wounded man was treated on the scene by Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance, then airlifted by Suffolk police to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The Riverhead Detective Division and an officer from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the scene and conducted an investigation into the incident, and determined it was "accidental in nature and no criminality" was involved, police said.
