Huntington begins cemetery steward program
The Town of Huntington is seeking history buffs to volunteer to check on the condition of dozens of the town's historic cemeteries.
The historic cemetery stewards program, created by Town Councilwoman Susan Berland, recruits volunteers to select one of the town's 56 cemeteries, then walk through it and determine what maintenance needs to be done at their site.
Volunteers are then asked to produce online reports twice a year on the state of the cemeteries, which will be used by the town in determining their maintenance and upkeep schedules.
"The historic cemetery stewards program allows volunteers to play an active role in the preservation of these properties and it gives the Town of Huntington important information to help maintain them," Berland said.
For more information or to volunteer for the program, contact Berland's office at 631-351-3173 or visit the town's website at town.huntington.ny.us.
