Huntington eyes updating, strengthening town blight law

Town officials have scheduled a public hearing to consider updating the town’s blight law.
The town board will consider strengthening the town’s demolition procedure regarding unsafe and damaged buildings and structures. The amendments specify conditions under which a building may be declared unsafe.
“These are much-needed amendments to the Town’s blighted properties code,” board member Susan Berland, sponsor of the resolution, said. “I am pleased we will now be able to take measures to enhance and streamline our already strong blight program.”
Berland said the town’s blight program is intended to hold owners accountable for their violations and to bring relief to surrounding properties, neighborhoods and further protect the health and well-being of residents.
The hearing will be held during the monthly town board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 2 p.m. at Town Hall.
