The Huntington town board voted to approve a zone change for a controversial parcel of land in the Mill Lane Historic District.

The board changed the zone from Light Industry District to R-5 Residential on the parcel on the east side of Prime Avenue, north of New York Avenue. The board twice before rejected a request by the property owner to build a service station in a historic district.

The owner now plans to open the shop on the site of an abandoned gas station adjacent to this parcel and erect homes on land where the zone change has been approved.

The board voted 4 to 1 for the zone change at the Aug. 16 town board meeting. Town board member Susan Berland abstained.
