Huntington rally targets AvalonBay plan

A group opposed to AvalonBay Communities' revised multifamily housing proposal for Huntington Station rallied against the plan outside Town Hall Thursday.

About two dozen members of the Greater Huntington Civic Group clutched signs and shouted slogans about taxes and school density at passing traffic.

Steven Spucces, the group's spokesman, said his group was gearing up for a fight against the AvalonBay housing plan over concerns about its effect on traffic and schools.

"AvalonBay and high-density housing is a cancer," Spucces told the group. "This cancer will move through our town and grow."

In March, AvalonBay submitted a proposal for 379 units of multifamily housing near the Huntington Long Island Rail Road station. A zoning change relating to the project is scheduled for a public hearing at Monday's town board meeting.

The developer had previously proposed a 490-unit plan, which was rejected by the town board last September after weeks of community contention.
