THE BUDGET

The district proposes a $120,394,737 budget for 2015-16, a 2.36 percent increase from the current $117,614,370. The local tax levy would rise 1.81 percent, from $100,413,940 to $102,235,551.

This increase is below the state's tax-cap limit of 2.12 percent, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget. School taxes on the average single-family home would increase 1.75 percent, from $8,146.60 to $8,289.30.

The proposed budget includes the addition of 12 teachers and the addition of AP or IB courses or electives. The district said teachers will receive a 1.25 increase midyear. A ballot proposition seeks authorization to release $1,031,000 from the district's capital reserve fund for such things as a public address and clock system and rear parking lot renovations at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School; heating, ventilation and air conditioning and second-floor door replacement and auditorium light replacement at Huntington High School. Approval of the proposition will have no effect on the tax rate or levy.

THE CANDIDATES

Incumbents Thomas DiGiacomo, Xavier Palacios and Emily Rogan and candidate Christine Biernacki are running unopposed. The candidate with the fourth-highest vote total receives the two-year term left open by the death of Adam Spector. The other three terms are for three years.
