Part of a brick facade on top of a Verizon store in downtown Huntington gave way, possibly due to weather-related stress, and crashed to the ground around 6:30 Tuesday night, police said.

No one was injured when pieces of huge, red-painted bricks crumbled from above the Verizon sign on the Main Street store and onto the sidewalk near Clinton Avenue.

A witness said a man and a woman had just walked out of the store when it happened. "I heard a really loud noise and I thought someone threw something through the window or a car crashed through it, and it was the building had fallen down," said Tammy Campagnola-Levinsky, 44, who was standing outside her new office at a tech startup on Main Street last evening when the brick shattered onto the sidewalk. "There were two people that had just walked out of the Verizon store that were standing there in awe that they barely missed it."

Huntington Fire Department firefighters and the Town of Huntington Fire Marshal responded, along with Suffolk police, and roped off the area. By 7:30, town public safety workers were cordoning off the portion of the sidewalk where the massive chunks of brick littered the pavement.

Second Precinct Officer James Garside said the collapse was "probably weather-related, due to the amount of snow and ice we've had this winter."He said customers would be able to access the store Wednesday from its Clinton Avenue entrance.
