Huntington town officials passed a resolution last week supporting New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman’s lawsuit challenging the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to designate an area of the coast of eastern Long Island as a permanent location for drug spoils.

The EPA completed a rule-making process in 2016 that designated a new site for dumping “tens of millions of yards of dredge sediment” in the eastern Long Island Sound, according to the resolution.

The EPA’s designation became official Jan. 5, despite local objections. Town board members voted unanimously on Sept. 19 to support Schneiderman’s opposition to the EPA’s plan.

“The Long Island Sound is a vital economic resource for the region, including Long Island’s commercial fishing industry, as well as a public recreational value and importance to Long Island’s tourism industry,” the resolution said.
