An application to change the zoning and rescind covenants on a parcel on the west side of Walt Whitman Road in Melville has been approved. The change will allow the construction of a HomeGoods store.

The covenants had applied to a previous application for a day care center that was never built. The rezoning includes new covenants and restrictions pertaining to the latest proposal.

A public hearing to consider changing the zoning and removing restrictive covenants on a piece of property on Walt Whitman Road in Melville is set for the town of Huntington.

The zoning change would go from general business and office residence to just general business. The parcel is at 881 Walt Whitman Rd., behind Bertucci’s restaurant and adjacent to a bowling alley.

The town board approved the measure 3-2 at the April 4 board meeting. Town board members Mark Cuthbertson and Tracey Edwards voted no.
