Cops: 2 flee shooting by entering Riverhead home
Two men fled an apparent gang-related shooting Tuesday evening by entering a home in Riverhead, startling a female resident before exiting out a back window, police said.
The incident occurred at a home on Segal Avenue at about 7:30 p.m., Riverhead Town police said. Police said a .12-gauge shotgun and 9-millimeter shell casings were recovered at the scene but could not specify where.
"It doesn't appear that she [the resident] knew these individuals," a police investigator told Newsday on Wednesday.
He said no one appeared to be injured.
Police said officers responding to a shots-fired call learned that the female resident, whose identity was not released because of the circumstances, heard several gunshots -- and said that, moments later, the two men entered her home.
"The subjects stated, 'They are shooting at us,'" police said in a news release detailing the witness account of the incident. The pair then fled out a back window, police said.
Police said an investigation determined that the front window of the home had been "shot out by a bullet." Information obtained by the investigation determined the shooting was likely "retaliation for a prior shooting," police said in a statement.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call investigators at 631-727-4500, ext. 633.
