A Coram man was killed early Friday when police said he lost control of his car on the eastbound Southern State Parkway near Exit 43 in Islip, striking a stand of trees.

The victim was identified as Mario Vitagliano, 46.

State Police said he was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Vitagliano was driving his 2000 Infiniti on the eastbound parkway when he lost control at about 2 a.m., crossing from the right lane into the center median — where he struck the trees. A photo from the scene showed the mangled wreckage.

It was not immediately clear if speed or weather were factors in the single-car crash.
