Islandia dad arrested under Leandra's Law

An Islandia father was arrested under Leandra's Law after he drove drunk Sunday night with his 4-year-old son in the car, police said.

Yaw Gyimah, 50, was arrested after his 1998 Mercedes was involved in an accident on West Suffolk Avenue in Central Islip at about 8:45 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

Officers found Gyimah's son in the car, determined he had not been injured in the crash, and conducted tests on Gyimah that determined he was under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Gyimah had an outstanding probation warrant for violating probation on a prior DWI conviction, police said. No details on that incident were immediately available on Monday.

Gyimah was charged with DWI, aggravated DWI involving a child, endangering the welfare of a child, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and the probation violation.

Under Leandra's Law, passed in November, the endangerment charge is a felony. The law was passed following the death of Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed in a DWI accident after the minivan in which she was driving crashed on the West Side Highway. The law makes it a felony to drive while intoxicated with anyone under 15 years old in the vehicle.
