Islip Democrats are talking to Brightwaters Mayor Joe McDermott about running for Islip supervisor against the recently appointed Republican incumbent, Angie Carpenter.

McDermott, 47, was elected in June as the village's mayor after he served as a trustee for a year. He defeated Deputy Mayor Denise Gibson, 481-423, for the open seat after the former mayor, Joseph McNulty, retired after 18 years in office.

In the village, candidates run under local party names. McDermott, a 12-year village resident, ran on the Unification Party line but is a registered Democrat. He is also a member of Ironworkers Local 361.
