NYS officials say no fuel leak at Islip shipyard after 2-alarm fire

State Department of Environmental Conservation officials said Tuesday evening that there were no fuel leaks or environmental impacts as a result of a shipyard fire in Islip Monday night.

The Town of Islip's hazmat team, the state DEC and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to scene of the two-alarm fire to investigate potential fuel and chemical runoff into a nearby canal that leads to the Great Cove, Islip firefighters said.

The DEC returned to investigate Tuesday and found no petroleum contamination, officials said. Investigators saw no fuel sheen in any of the neighboring bodies of water but will continue to monitor the environmental area.

Suffolk County arson investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fire.

Islip firefighters were called to the Winter Bros. Shipyard and a building at 21 Athasca Rd., south of Montauk Highway, at about 7 p.m. after several 911 calls, Islip firefighters said.

Islip firefighters ran three handlines to battle the fire on the first and second floors of the unoccupied building, fire officials said. Firefighters did not find anyone inside.

Fire boats from Bay Shore and East Islip helped battle the flames from the nearby canal and West Islip, Islip Terrace and Central Islip firefighters also assisted the fire department.

Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries at the scene and released.
