Islip Supervisor Phil Nolan has decided to name town Councilman Gene Parrington to the position of deputy supervisor.

Nolan said he plans to name Parrington, a fellow Democrat, to the post Wednesday.

Parrington will replace Jeanine Dillon, who had served as Nolan's chief of staff for four years before being appointed deputy supervisor in May.

He would fulfill the supervisor's duties should Nolan, 60, be unavailable or incapacitated.

The move represents an organizational change in the supervisor's office.

For now, Nolan's chief of staff, George Hoffman, who was hired in May, and other staff in the supervisor's office will take on the work that Dillon performed, Nolan said.

"We'll definitely be adding staff as the new roles become defined," he said.

Parrington's salary will not be increased, Nolan said. He is paid $77,200 as a board member.

"I'm glad that I'm a part of trying to improve the services of the town without raising taxes," said Parrington, 59.

Dillon, 38, who drew a town salary of $103,100 and had previously worked as assistant deputy Suffolk County executive under Steve Levy, said she is mulling three job offers in the public sector. She resigned Friday.

Nolan said he, Parrington and John Edwards, the remaining Democrat on the five-member board, decided that Parrington should take on the new role.

"I would have been comfortable with either one of them," Nolan said.

Parrington is a former electrician and is an officer for the International Brotherhood of Electricians Local 25.
