Police responded to a disturbance early Thursday involving a Smithtown man who was key to bringing down Suffolk County Chief of Department James Burke, authorities said Friday.
Christopher Loeb, 29, was involved in a fight at a Mount Sinai condo complex at about 2:10 a.m., according to Suffolk police.
Police said Loeb and a woman drove from the Woodridge Strathmore Terrace complex at 1:30 a.m., picked up a man and returned.
As the car stopped at the complex’s security booth, people inside the vehicle began to fight. A security guard attempted to separate the parties and was injured, according to police.
Loeb and the guard were taken to a hospital where they were treated and released, police said.
Police are investigating the incident and said no one has been charged.
Loeb pleaded guilty to stealing a duffel bag from Burke’s department vehicle in 2012. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison and was released in July.
Burke, who resigned in October, was arrested Dec. 9 on charges of assaulting the handcuffed Loeb after the theft and conspiring to cover it up during a federal grand jury investigation.
U.S. District Judge Leonard Wexler denied bail for Burke, agreeing with prosecutors who argued that the former chief was a danger to the community.
