Jamesport couple offers reward for return of safe, police say
A Jamesport couple is offering a "substantial cash reward" for the return of a safe, stolen last month during a residential burglary, Riverhead Town police said Tuesday.
"Basically, it's no questions asked, yes," said Det. Mike Schmidt of the offer from the Ziemacki Lane residents.
The safe was taken between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 12, police said.
Schmidt said two people would likely be needed to move the safe, a tan-colored Sentry model, about 2-feet by 2-feet in size.
The homeowners are requesting the safe be returned because some of its contents are of "sentimental value," Schmidt said.
He would not divulge the amount of the reward, but a police news release called it "a substantial cash reward" for information leading to the return of the safe or the arrest of the burglars.
Suffolk County Crime Stoppers also is offering a reward for information; typically, its reward is up to $5,000.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers 800-220-8477 or Riverhead Town Police at 631-727-4500, ext. 633. All calls will be kept confidential.
