SPCA offers reward in death of pit bull Jax

The Suffolk County SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible in the death of an Islip Terrace family's pit bull.
The animal protection agency said Tuesday that Jax, a male pit bull, was killed by a pellet shot to the chest.
Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk SPCA said Jax was brought to Grady Animal Hospital in Sayville where a necropsy by Dr. Mark Caporaso determined the cause of death.
"He died from a pellet shot," Caporaso said.
The dog's owner, John Balk, 62, said Jax was let out into the yard at about 9:30 a.m. and found around 10:05 a.m., with "blood coming out of his mouth."
Said Balk: "I just totally lost it."
Gross said the agency is investigating. He said he agency believes the dog was shot, but didn't immediately have details on the type of gun used.
