A driver was seriously injured early Sunday when his Jeep overturned several times in the East End community of Peconic, police said.

The 33-year-old man was driving his 1993 Jeep, heading west on County Road 48 near Henrys Lane, about 12:30 a.m. when he swerved into the center grass median, Southold Town police Sgt. Scott Latham said.

As the driver attempted to get back onto the road, he skidded sideways, causing the the Jeep to flip several times, Latham said. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver, who was not identified, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was airlifted by Suffolk County police.

Police are still investigating what caused the Jeep to overturn. Police said no evidence of drugs or alcohol were found at the scene.
