A Riverhead man was arrested and arraigned Saturday morning on a second-degree assault charge after his live-in girlfriend alleged he hit her several times with a belt, police said.
Riverhead Town police were called to a residence on Wilson Avenue at about 12:05 a.m. and arrested Jesus Flores, 25, for beating the 24-year-old woman, authorities said.
The woman, whose name was not released, suffered bruises and a scratch on her face but was not taken to a hospital, Det. David Freeborn said.
"He had been out all day and she wanted him to come home, and I guess he got angry," Freeborn said.
The couple's two children, ages 7 and 1½ months, were home at the time but were not harmed, Freeborn said.
Flores was taken to the Riverhead Town Police Department, where was held until his arraignment. In Riverhead Town Justice Court, Flores went before Judge Allen Smith and was released on $2,500 cash bail, Freeborn said.
Attorney information was not immediately available for Flores. Attempts to reach Flores by phone were unsuccessful.
