Suffolk cop helps deliver baby in Dix Hills, police say

A Suffolk County police officer helped deliver a baby girl early Wednesday after another officer had pulled over to check on a vehicle stopped on Deer Park Avenue in Dix Hills.

Suffolk County police said Officer Jonathan Murray, driving patrol vehicle No. 221, helped deliver the baby at 2:21 a.m.

Police said the baby, weighing 6 pounds, 11 ounces, and her mother were taken to Huntington Hospital.

Police said that at 2:08 a.m., Second Precinct Patrol Officer Joseph Ferro was on patrol when he noticed a vehicle stopped on Deer Park Avenue, south of Jericho Turnpike.

When he asked the driver whether he needed help, Ferro was told that the man’s wife, age 32, was in labor.

Two other officers — Gerard Maxim and Murray — responded to the scene, and Murray assisted the mother in the birth, police said.
