Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives investigate a motor vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian on Montauk Highway in Bellport on Sept. 19, 2015. Credit: Stringer News

Suffolk County police are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a pedestrian in Bellport Saturday night.

The victim was identified as Juan Mejia, 28, of Carver Boulevard, Bellport. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Police said Arce Catu, 24, of West Masem Square, East Patchogue, was driving a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit westbound on Montauk Highway when his vehicle struck Mejia as he was attempting to cross north on Montauk Highway, west of Bellport Avenue.

Catu was not injured.

Detectives said anyone who saw the crash could call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477.
