The robber wore a mask and a multicolored hat with fake dreadlocks in an attempt to hide his identity as he stole cash from the CapitalOne Bank in Greenport on Thursday, police said. But, in the end, he couldn't cover his tracks, police said.

Town of Southold police said Brian B. Edwards, 45, was arrested after a K-9 unit tracked his scent to his house on Second Street -- just a few blocks from the bank on Main Street.

Police said officers recovered the clothing worn by Edwards during the robbery, as well as the robbery proceeds.

He was charged with third-degree robbery and second-degree criminal trespass and held overnight for arraignment Friday in Southold Town Justice Court, police said.

Police said Edwards, wearing the mask, hat, fake dreadlocks and a black-and-gray jacket, robbed the bank at about 4:10 p.m. -- but a 911 call notified police of the robbery in progress. Police got a description of Edwards from witnesses and a K-9 unit called to the scene soon tracked his scent.
