As a result of higher-than-acceptable levels of bacteria, Lake Ronkonkoma Beach has been closed to swimmers, Suffolk County health officials said Thursday.

"Bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat," said Dr. James Tomarken, county health commissioner, in a news release.

To stay up on the latest developments, call the county's beach hotline at 631-852-5822 or go to gis2.suffolkcountyny.gov/bathingbeaches/
