A pickup truck towing landscaping equipment in a trailer crashed onto a guardrail on Montauk Highway in Westhampton on Tuesday morning, Southampton Town police said.

The road was shut in both directions and a reopening time is not known, Lt. Susan Ralph said by telephone.

The police were alerted to the crash by a phone call at 10:42 a.m.; the truck’s owner reported it had been stolen, she said.

One person was injured in the crash, which left the truck and its trailer straddling the guardrail, Ralph said.

The crash is being investigated, she said.

Someone from the truck ran from the scene, prompting Suffolk County police to send in a K-9 unit to search for that individual, she said.

Utility workers also are working on repairs, she said, though further specifics were not immediately available.
