Suffolk Legis. Wayne Horsley (D-Babylon) was to start Monday as the $120,000-a-year regional director of Long Island state parks. He even was set to hand in his resignation letter from the legislative seat on Friday.

But before Horsley could deliver it, Suffolk Democratic chairman Richard Schaffer said, state parks officials delayed Horsley's start until after the county legislature passes the 2014 budget. Several hours later, park officials called Horsley, the deputy presiding officer, telling him to arrive Nov. 6.

Presiding Officer William J. Lindsay (D-Holbrook) said: "My understanding is that Rich Schaffer intervened and asked the state if Wayne could stay until we were done with the budget . . . I'm very happy. I could use the help."-- Rick Brand
