Legislature presiding officer up for grabs
In talks over who becomes the Suffolk legislature's next presiding officer, several sources say a scenario is under discussion to have Assemb. Robert Sweeney (D-Lindenhurst) forgo re-election next fall and Legis. DuWayne Gregory (D-Amityville) seek that seat rather than run for presiding officer. This would clear a path for Legis. Louis D'Amaro (North Babylon) -- reportedly County Executive Steve Bellone's favorite for presiding officer. But state sources say Sweeney indicated to Richard Schaffer, Suffolk Democratic chairman, he'd probably run again, and Schaffer himself said: "No one tells Bob Sweeney what to do." Gregory said he hasn't been approached.
