A Levittown man turned an accident into a literal hit-and-run in Peconic on Tuesday when he fled the scene on foot -- only to be apprehended a short time later, police said.

Keith Whitenack, 36, was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to yield right of way while making a left turn, police said.

Southold Town police said the crash occurred at about 3:45 p.m. on Route 25.

They said Whitenack, traveling eastbound, made a left turn in front of Christine Watts-Gorman, 49, of Peconic, striking her vehicle. Police said Whitenack then fled on foot.

No one was injured in the crash, police said.

Whitenack was later released on bail.
