ISLIP/Fifth-grade artist, fundraiser to ring bell at Stock Exchange

Olivia Bouler, the 11-year-old artist whose fundraising for Gulf Coast birds has gained national attention, has been invited to ring the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange, a spokeswoman for the exchange has said.

The Islip fifth-grader, who launched her project in May by offering to paint watercolors for people who donated to the National Audubon Society, was featured in the issue of People Magazine that hit newsstands Wednesday and was to be highlighted last night on "The O'Reilly Factor."

She has raised more than $135,000 to rehabilitate birds and restore habitat affected by the BP oil spill.

Town to unveil spray park at Bay Shore Marina

Islip Town will unveil its new spray park at the Bay Shore Marina Saturday with a day of music, games and fireworks.

The 6,000-square-foot wading pool, dubbed "Shipwreck Cove," features water cannons, dump buckets and slides. It was built with $1.5 million in capital funds, which officials say will be recouped through admission fees.

Saturday's grand opening, starting at 9 a.m., will include treasure hunts, sand castle building, arts and crafts and musical performances, capped with fireworks at 9 p.m., Parks Commissioner Greg Dawson said. Access to the park, at the southern end of South Clinton Avenue in Bay Shore, costs five dollars for residents with recreation cards, $7.50 for residents without a recreation card and $10 for nonresidents. Recreation cards cost $25 for three years.
