LI could see an inch of rain today, tonight
Get your umbrellas ready Long Islanders. Things are going to get very wet Sunday as a system from the Midwest moves in and brings heavy rain.
The timing of this storm is difficult to predict. As of now, it looks as though light to moderate precipitation will begin in the mid-afternoon, with just overcast skies and a chance of some scattered sprinkles any earlier than that. The difficult part to predict is the heavier rain, slated to impact the region Sunday evening and throughout the night.
The heaviest of the rain could arrive after sundown. Rainfall totals for Sunday night into Monday could be in excess of an inch in many places. That being said, I would not be surprised if flash or coastal flood watches were issued in the next 12 hours.
Temperatures will be in the low 50s. But just like Saturday, they will be repressed in ocean-facing locations, as the breezy south wind off the frigid Atlantic Ocean will make it feel more like the lower 40s. Ocean temps this time of year are in the mid-30s. Winds will range from 15-20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
I’ll be updating the forecast throughout the day for this complicated rain storm, so be sure to check Newsday.com for all the latest.
