RIVERHEAD/3 sex offenders arrested for failing to register locally

Three of the four registered sex offenders who walked away from their homeless shelter in Riverhead have been arrested on charges of failing to register as sex offenders with their local jurisdictions, Southampton Town police said Wednesday.

Daniel Hernandez, 24, was arrested in Texas on Friday, Antoine Hubbard, 31, was arrested in Bay Shore on Friday and Larry Lamar, 57, was arrested in Riverhead on Monday, according to Det. Sgt. Lisa A. Costa of the Southampton police.

Angel Tirado, 40, was still at large late Wednesday, she said.

All four had left the homeless trailers near the county jail in Riverhead in recent weeks and failed to register a new residence within 10 days, she said. All were indicted by a grand jury on a felony charge of failing to register, and arrest warrants went out last Friday, she said.

There were 1,017 registered sex offenders in Suffolk County as of Monday, out of a statewide total of 35,713, according to the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, which runs the sex offender registry. Last year, 531 registered sex offenders statewide were convicted of failing to register, agency spokeswoman Janine Kava said.
