LI golf course's owners seek zoning change

The owners of the Island Green golf course in Selden are seeking to change the property's zoning from business to multifamily residential, according to Brookhaven Town officials.

The owners are proposing a development of 126 condominiums on the site's 14.2 acres, along with open green space and dedicated space for civic use, officials said.

The zoning application will be the subject of a public hearing 6:30 Tuesday at Town Hall in Farmingville.

Calls to the owners of the golf course were not returned Monday.

Island Green, known for its miniature golf course dotted with scale versions of Long Island landmarks such as the Big Duck, was opened in 1996 by Frederic Rose, the former chief executive officer and president of the Clare Rose beverage distribution family, according to business records.

The developer of the site is Island Green Associates. Rose did not return calls for comment Monday.

Town Councilman Dan Panico said he is worried that the site's conversion to residential use meant the town would lose another place for residents to play. Island Green also features a driving range.

"I think there is a dwindling amount of commercial recreation in Brookhaven Town," he said. "We have close to 500,000 residents and, as I look across this town, whether it be this site or The Links at Shirley [a former golf course], I feel we have a dwindling stock which puts an added burden on our municipal recreation."
