The New York Philanthropic Advisory Service has recognized the Long Island Maritime Museum as an approved charitable organization, the West Sayville museum announced.

The service, a program of the Education & Research Foundation of the Metropolitan New York Better Business Bureau, provides information about charities for potential donors.

"The museum took the important step of soliciting a third party review because we realize that it is necessary to enhance the comfort level of large contributors and philanthropists in order for us to take advantage of every fundraising opportunity," board chairman Mike Eagan said in a statement. "We have some large building projects ahead in the next 24 months and we will be embarking on some new and exciting fundraising drives."

The museum works "to preserve Long Island's maritime history and heritage for educational purposes," spokeswoman Kathleen Prokesch said in a statement. It was founded in 1964 and operates under a license with Suffolk County.
