LI official: Man wanted in S. Korea murder
When a South Korean man was cited for improper fishing in Southold Sunday afternoon, it turned out to be the least of his problems.
A Southold Bay constable who made contact with the man, Kim Byung Soo, 57, discovered he was wanted for murder in South Korea. "We sometimes get people for fishery violations," said Senior Southold Bay Constable Don Dzenkowski. "And sometimes they're wanted for minor crimes, but nothing like this."
Southold police discovered Kim was being sought by INTERPOL, the International Police Organization. Dzenkowski said he and another constable saw Kim fishing on Clark's Beach in Greenport. The beach was closed. When they approached he "picked up a fish and threw it into the water," a violation of state law, Dzenkowski said.
Kim gave them an expired driver's license with a Queens address. The constables went to check his ID. A dispatcher said Kim was wanted for murder, Dzenkowski said.
Kim was arrested and ordered held for customs and INTERPOL authorities said.
