Rainfall left Long Island drenched on Friday, but Saturday is forecast to be dry during the day, with a slim chance of a slight snowfall beginning about midnight, the National Weather Service said late Friday.

Temperatures Saturday are expected to be in the 30s, said meteorologist John Murray of the weather service. If snow falls, it's expected to be less than an inch across most of the Island.

Friday's high winds - which peaked at 59 miles per hour - were capable of bringing down trees and power lines and tossing lightweight outdoor objects, such as trash cans and deck furniture. By late Friday, Island weather stations reported 1 to 2 inches of rainfall as the high winds continued.

Long Island Power Authority spokesman Mark Gross said the electric utility would continue to monitor the storm and had nearly three times the normal workforce available for emergency work. Employees are ready to put in 16-hour shifts, he said.

"If we need to increase that workforce we'll do so in order to restore any outages to our customers as quickly as possible," Gross said.

As of about 8 p.m. Friday, the utility's website listed about 400 of LIPA's 1.1 million customers without power because of the weather. Earlier in the day, LIPA reported that about 3,000 customers had no power.

LIPA customers can report outages by calling 800-490-0075 or by visiting lipower.org, he said.

Kennedy was experiencing delays averaging nearly three hours because of the wind - delays that continued into Friday night.

Arrival delays at LaGuardia were averaging 1 hour and 44 minutes on Friday night, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
