Two injured in Melville LIE crash; eastbound lanes reopened

Two people were injured in a crash on the Long Island Expressway in Melville that temporarily closed eastbound lanes Thursday afternoon, Suffolk police said.
The crash happened at 3:30 p.m. when a man driving a Volkswagen sedan left the HOV lane and rear-ended a woman who was driving a Mercedes sport utility vehicle near Exit 48, Round Swamp Road, police said.
Melville firefighters and rescue squad crews used the “Jaws of Life” to extricate the Volkswagen’s driver, who was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, according to a fire department spokesman. The Melville rescue squad took the second driver to Plainview Hospital, the spokesman said.
The drivers did not have life-threatening injuries, police said.
The crash closed the LIE for about an hour. All lanes have been reopened, police said.
Police said the Volkswagen driver was issued several summonses, including one for failing to leave the HOV lane at the designated exit.
