A driver was killed Thursday on the Long Island Expressway in Ronkonkoma after she lost control of an SUV and struck a guardrail, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Detectives are investigating whether the woman, 61-year-old Pamela Hanlon, of Port Jefferson Station, may have had a medical episode before the crash, the department said in a news release.
The crash happened at about 11:40 a.m. on the eastbound expressway, between Exits 58 and 59. Hanlon was driving a 2017 Toyota Highlander and struck the guardrail on the side of the HOV lane, police said. The eastbound expressway was closed for about 90 minutes during a police investigation.
Nationwide, medical emergencies account for 1.3% of drivers involved in crashes, according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
