A 73-year-old Cold Spring Harbor man was removed from a Delta flight Thursday at Charleston International Airport after crew members said he threatened former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who was seated next to him, The Associated Press reported.

The man was questioned, released with no charges - and allowed to continue his travel plans - Charleston Aviation Authority Police Chief Al Britnell told the AP.

Officials told The Associated Press the flight originated in New York, and an airport police report said flight attendants claimed the man made verbal threats against Sanford.

The former governor drew national attention in 2009 when he vanished for five days - and later confessed to having an affair in Argentina.

The Long Island man involved in the rant Thursday was not identified.

Britnell told the AP the man was met at the arrival gate by police, was questioned and later released.

The flight number and originating airport were unknown.

The Associated Press reported that crew members told police the man yelled about having friends in politics and seemed irritated with passengers, including Sanford.

Sanford has not spoken publicly about his professional plans since leaving the governor's mansion. He did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

In June 2009, the Republican left the state for five days and told his staff he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, but he was really in Argentina visiting Maria Belen Chapur. He held a news conference to confess infidelity to his wife and later declared his lover his "soul mate" in lengthy interviews with The Associated Press.

Weeks later, Jenny Sanford moved out of the governor's mansion in Columbia with their sons. The governor did not contest the divorce.

A week after Sanford left office, he and Chapur were spotted frolicking on the beach in the same Uruguay resort where their romance began.
