Public hearing on Lindenhurst $12M budget set for Tuesday, Jan. 6

The Village of Lindenhurst is holding a public hearing on its proposed budget Tuesday night.

The village is proposing a $12 million budget for 2015-16, an increase over last year's budget of $11.8 million.

The total tax levy would increase 2 percent from $6.5 million to $6.6 million. Taxes for an average home assessed at $4,400 would rise 1.4 percent or $10.12. The sanitation costs for a single-family house would remain the same at $202.

The projected budget includes an appropriated surplus of $22,000 for partial refunds of 2012-13 taxes for 76 properties significantly damaged by superstorm Sandy.

Village Clerk-Treasurer Shawn Cullinane noted that the budget stays under the 2 percent state tax cap. Last year the village pierced that cap with a tax increase that exceeded 8 percent, in part due to Sandy-related drops in assessed valuation.

The village experienced a 0.6 percent increase in assessed valuation this year.

The hearing will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 430 S. Wellwood Ave.
