A body was discovered early Saturday along railroad tracks in Shirley, according to the Long Island Rail Road.

A freight train conductor traveling west reported seeing the body about 1:45 a.m. along the tracks between the William Floyd Parkway and the Long Island Expressway, said Marjorie Anders, a spokeswoman for the railroad.

There was no Long Island Rail Road service operating at the time of the discovery. The body was found east of the Ronkonkoma station on the Ronkonkoma Branch, Anderson said.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority police are investigating the discovery. No identification has been released by police, who removed the body about 5:30 a.m.
