The Long Island Rail Road is busing riders between Speonk and Montauk this weekend as temporary repairs are made to a railroad overpass damaged by a truck, the agency said.
LIRR crews were working around the clock to shore up one of two support girders for the Montauk line bridge at Hill Station Road near Hampton Bays, the railroad said.
The overpass suffered extensive damage when a southbound truck with a boom hit the structure about 4:20 p.m. Friday, according to the railroad and Southampton Town police. There were no injuries.
The 2003 flatbed truck became wedged underneath, damaging the "structural integrity" of the overpass, Southampton Town police said in a news release.
Engineers were at the scene Friday to examine the damage, and service in both directions was shut down.
The Suffolk County police motor carrier safety division investigated the truck to make sure it met all vehicle and traffic law standards, police said.
The driver for Shirley-based Riverhead Building Supply was cited for violating the overpass' height limit. Attempts to reach company officials for comment Saturday were unsuccessful.
Temporary fixes to the overpass are expected to be completed today, with service restored in time for Monday's commute, said Sam Zambuto, LIRR spokesman. The railroad is assessing what permanent repairs are needed.
On a typical spring weekend, a few hundred riders per day use the line east of Speonk, Zambuto said.
Police have closed Hill Station Road from Club Drive to McGregor Drive. Customers should check the LIRR website and can also sign up for email alerts in order to monitor the service to the affected section of the Montauk line, Zambuto said.
