LIRR: Fatality is 14-year-old boy
A person struck and killed by an LIRR train in Sayville Saturday night was a 14 year-old boy, an LIRR spokesman said Sunday.
MTA police are investigating the fatality as a possible suicide, said LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan.
The Jamaica-bound train was travelling at 63 miles per hour at 9:35 p.m. Saturday when its engineer saw the boy on the tracks near Cherry Lane. "He immediately put the brakes into emergency," Donovan said. "He wasn't able to stop the train in time."
The train had originated in Montauk and was traveling west to Jamaica, authorities said.
