LIRR: 'Heavy holiday travel' causes delays
A handful of Long Island Rail Road trains on the Port Jefferson and Montauk branches were being delayed during the Friday evening rush because of "congestion caused by heavy holiday travel," the LIRR reported on its web site.
Two trains on the Port Jefferson branch were running 11 minutes and 14 minutes late respectively. Two trains on the Montauk branch were running 17 minutes and 10 minutes late respectively, the LIRR said.
The LIRR provided additional early-afternoon train service from Penn on six lines, including the Montauk and Port Jefferson branches, to accommodate travelers heading to Long Island for the extended Memorial Day holiday weekend.
