A man was struck by a Long Island Rail Road train and killed Friday morning at a grade-level street crossing in Bayport, officials said.

The identity of the man has not been released.

The railroad said the man was struck by an eastbound diesel locomotive at the Bayport Avenue crossing just after 9:15 a.m. "Based on a preliminary investigation by MTA police it appears the crossing gates at the crossing were operating as intended" at the time of the accident, railroad spokesman Sam Zambuto said.

The train involved in the incident was the 8:52 a.m. train from Babylon, scheduled to arrive in Montauk at 10:52 a.m.

Officials said service on the branch has been suspended -- and said bus service is being provided as an alternative.

The 10:26 a.m. train from Babylon to Patchogue was canceled, as was the 10:34 a.m. train from Patchogue to Babylon. The Montauk-to-Speonk portion of the 11:18 a.m. Montauk-to-Jamaica train will be handled by bus service, officials said, with passengers then boarding a train in Speonk to complete the trip to Jamaica.

Meanwhile, Zambuto said the investigation by MTA police into the fatal accident is continuing and said the circumstances were not yet clear.
