A Long Island Rail Road spokesman said early morning delays on the Port Jefferson branch were caused by an emotionally disturbed man who had wandered onto the tracks near Northport Friday.

The situation occurred near the Sunken Meadow Parkway overpass at about 6:20 a.m.

The crew of the 5:44 a.m. train from Port Jefferson to Penn Station managed to stop in the area and take the man safely aboard, railroad spokesman Salvatore Arena said.

The man was then handed over to police at the Northport station and transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center for observation, Arena said. The man was not struck by the train, Arena said.

The train was delayed 43 minutes, Arena said.
