The Long Island Rail Road's Montauk branch was back in service, with some delays between Sayville and Patchogue, Tuesday morning after a vehicle was struck earlier by a westbound train east of Sayville, the railroad said.
"We are attempting to obtain buses. Customers are advised to expect some delays and cancellations," the railroad said in a tweet.
One person in the vehicle was taken to the hospital, a railroad spokesman said. The number of people in the vehicle and what caused the collision are not yet known, he added.
The collision led the railroad to cancel the 11:21 a.m. train from Babylon to Speonk, while the 10:22 a.m. train from Patchogue to Babylon was delayed, the railroad tweeted.
Jamie Atkinson, President of the Community Ambulance Company, which responded to the crash along with others, released a statement saying: "The vehicle and patient were heavily lodged under the train. It took 18 minutes for the patient to be extricated from the vehicle and the patient was transported in a Community Ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital while being treated with Advanced Life Support in serious condition.
"No commuters onboard the train or the Train Engineer were injured as a result of the incident," the statement said.
