LIRR service back to normal after man hit by train
Service on the Ronkonkoma branch of the Long Island Rail Road returned to normal Wednesday morning, after being suspended when a man was struck by a train and killed Tuesday night in Central Islip.
The fatal accident occurred at about 10:45 p.m.
An MTA spokeswoman, Marjorie Anders, said the person, believed to be a "trespasser," was struck at the Pond Road crossing just west of Ronkonkoma, by a train that departed Penn Station at 9:15 p.m.
The train was due at the Ronkonkoma station at 10:37 p.m., but it was running a few minutes behind, Anders said.
The railroad said Wednesday that the engineer reported the man was "laying on the tracks," but said it was not immediately clear if the incident was an intentional act.
The railroad made bus service available at the Central Islip station Tuesday night to take passengers to the Ronkonkoma station, Anders said.
About 200 passengers remained on the train, as MTA officials investigated and cleared the tracks, Anders said. A westbound train that departed Greenport at 9:39 p.m. and was due at Ronkonkoma at 11:02 p.m. was held in Medford.
